Telangana to Conduct Statewide Caste Census in November 2024

The government of Telangana is preparing to conduct a comprehensive caste census across the state, beginning November 4 and expected to conclude by November 30. This survey aims to collect detailed data on the socio-economic conditions and distribution of caste groups to support the planning and implementation of targeted welfare programs. Minister Ponnam Prabhakar announced the initiative on Saturday, following a cabinet meeting where officials approved the survey’s structure and methodology.

Goals of the Telangana Caste Census

The caste census is designed to give the Telangana government a deeper understanding of the socio-economic status of various caste groups. By assessing the needs and challenges faced by different communities, the state can plan more effective welfare measures that align with the unique requirements of each group. The data is expected to be invaluable for developing policies that promote social equity, address economic disparities, and enhance opportunities across Telangana’s diverse population.

Timeline and Workforce for the Census

The census, covering every household in Telangana, is set to begin on November 4 or 5 and conclude by the end of the month. Minister Prabhakar stated that approximately 80,000 government employees will be mobilized to conduct the survey, each receiving training on data collection procedures to ensure accuracy and consistency.

Government Commitment and Transparency

The Telangana Assembly passed a resolution supporting this caste census, which the state cabinet approved along with the survey’s detailed proforma. Minister Prabhakar emphasized that the data collected will be made publicly available, showcasing the government’s commitment to transparency. He highlighted that the survey aligns with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s broader objective of conducting caste surveys across the nation to ensure equitable policy development.

Infrastructure Development Initiatives

In addition to the caste census, the Telangana cabinet approved significant infrastructure projects that address housing and transportation needs. Revenue Minister P. Srinivas Reddy announced the construction of 3,500 homes for economically disadvantaged individuals in each of Telangana’s 119 assembly constituencies. This initiative, scheduled for launch by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy shortly after Diwali as part of the Indiramma Housing Program, aims to provide stable housing for some of the state’s most vulnerable citizens.

Hyderabad Metro Expansion and New Road Networks

Further infrastructure expansions include a 76.4-kilometer extension of the Hyderabad Metro Rail, covering five new routes. This ambitious project, with an investment exceeding Rs 24,000 crore, will be implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP) involving both state and central government funds. The metro extension seeks to enhance connectivity and ease traffic congestion in Hyderabad, promoting sustainable urban mobility.

To complement the metro expansion, the cabinet also approved the development of a new road network using the PPP model. A senior official-led committee will evaluate similar models from other states to ensure the success of this project. This road network, with an estimated budget between Rs 25,000 crore and Rs 28,000 crore, is expected to be completed within the next four years, significantly improving infrastructure across Telangana.

Conclusion

The upcoming caste census and infrastructure projects mark a comprehensive approach by the Telangana government to address socio-economic challenges and infrastructure needs. By gathering detailed data on caste-based socio-economic conditions, the state aims to foster more inclusive and targeted welfare programs. Concurrently, the investment in housing and transportation projects underscores the government’s dedication to improving the quality of life for its residents.
