The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued a yellow alert for Tamil Nadu (TN) and Puducherry (Pondy), predicting heavy rain for the next four days. According to the weather department, a deep depression is developing over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to move toward Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka within the next 24 hours.

An orange alert has been issued for multiple districts, including Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukkottai, with expectations of heavy to very heavy rainfall on Wednesday. Heavy Rain in Other Parts of Tamil Nadu

In addition to the districts under the orange alert, other areas like Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchy, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, and Villupuram are likely to experience heavy rainfall. The rain is expected to intensify on December 16 and 17, potentially disrupting daily activities.

Northeast Monsoon Brings Excess Rainfall

Tamil Nadu has experienced a significant surplus in rainfall during the northeast monsoon season, which spans from October 1 to December 10. The region recorded 447 mm of rainfall, exceeding the average of 393 mm by 14%.

Chennai and Coimbatore Receive Record Rainfall

Chennai recorded 845 mm of rainfall, marking a 16% increase over the seasonal average. Similarly, Coimbatore witnessed a 47% rise in rainfall, categorized as excessively high during this monsoon period. These figures highlight the intensified weather patterns affecting the region.
