Double iSmart Review: Ram’s Energy Can’t Save this Predictable Sequel

Introduction: A Formulaic Start

The film “Double iSmart” opens with the childhood scenes of Shankar (played by Ram Pothineni) alongside his mother Jhansi. Soon, the narrative shifts to introduce Sanjay Dutt as Big Bull, a wealthy and influential businessman, through a typical action-packed entry. The movie follows the conventional template of Telugu cinema, with predictable hero and heroine introductions, leading into flashback sequences post-interval.

Storyline: A Tale of Recycled Plots

The plot revolves around Big Bull, a multi-millionaire diagnosed with a brain tumor, who is advised to undergo a brain transplant. This procedure, involving the transfer of his memories into another person, leads to Shankar becoming the recipient of those memories via a chip. The storyline attempts to build suspense around how this transformation impacts Shankar and his journey thereafter. However, the narrative fails to offer anything new, heavily relying on clichéd elements from its predecessor, “iSmart Shankar.”

Ram Pothineni: A One-Man Show

Ram Pothineni, reprising his role as Shankar, delivers a high-energy performance, reminiscent of his earlier days as the “Energetic Star.” His commitment to the role is evident, and his portrayal of Shankar is one of the few redeeming qualities of the film. From his dance moves to his dialogue delivery, Ram is fully immersed in his character, making him the primary reason audiences may stay engaged with the movie.

Kavya Thapar: The Quintessential Puri Heroine

Kavya Thapar, who plays Jannat, Shankar’s love interest, fits the mold of a typical Puri Jagannadh heroine. While she adds glamour to the film, her performance is average, neither standing out nor detracting significantly from the overall narrative. The dubbing for her character, however, does not do her any favors, making her presence feel somewhat forced and less impactful.

Puri Jagannadh’s Direction: A Shadow of His Former Glory

Director Puri Jagannadh, known for his distinct style, seems to have lost his touch in “Double iSmart.” The film lacks the freshness and sharpness that were hallmarks of his earlier works like “Pokiri” and “Businessman.” The humor, especially the comedy track featuring Ali, falls flat, with repetitive and unfunny sequences that test the audience’s patience.

Sanjay Dutt: A Missed Opportunity

Sanjay Dutt’s role as Big Bull, while adding star power, is undermined by poor dubbing and a lackluster script. His character, intended to be imposing and influential, is diluted by these shortcomings, leaving little room for the actor to make a lasting impact.

Music and Cinematography: Mediocre Execution

Mani Sharma, who previously contributed to the success of “iSmart Shankar,” returns as the music director. However, the soundtrack of “Double iSmart” fails to recreate the magic of its predecessor. The background score is passable, but none of the songs leave a lasting impression. The cinematography, while adequate in some scenes, particularly those with a gangster backdrop, lacks innovation and fails to elevate the film visually.

Pacing and Length: A Tedious Experience

One of the major drawbacks of “Double iSmart” is its pacing. The film drags in several parts, with unnecessary scenes and forced drama that contribute to its excessive length. The second half, which should have capitalized on the intriguing memory transfer concept, instead meanders through predictable plot points and lacks the intensity required to keep the audience hooked.

Conclusion: A Sequel That Falls Short

“Double iSmart” tries to bank on the success of “iSmart Shankar” but fails to deliver a compelling narrative. While Ram Pothineni’s energetic performance and the novel plot element of memory transfer provide some moments of interest, the film is ultimately let down by routine execution, weak writing, and a lack of fresh ideas. Fans of the prequel might find some enjoyment, but for the average viewer, “Double iSmart” is a forgettable experience that doesn’t live up to expectations.
