This film was directed by Siva and managed to earn an impressive amount of ₹16.67 crore on its first day itself across all its language versions. The film did not get good reviews from critics, but the earnings of the film on the first day only showcases how well the film appealed to the general audience. It seems that Kanguva will make significant earnings at the box office, with Suriya and Bobby Deol providing crucial star power to the film’s potential. Kanguva box office collections Movies’ first day collection The first day collection of the movie took this number to ₹16.67 crore, which was a great achievement for the film considering the controversy when it first released. The support and the enthusiasm of the fans was very useful in generating sales for the film at the beginning, whereas great numbers were recorded in the sale of tickets for the Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and other language markets. Many people came to support the movie since it had amazing action scenes, a good storyline, and had famous stars, and so they had a feeling that it would do well in the coming days. Overview of the Matka Movie Plot and Location Touted as a period drama by its makers, Telugu movie Matka directed by Karuna Kumar treads on the world of gambling and the concept of power. Although in its marketing material it claims to emulate that high time of cinema of late 1950s to early 1980s but rather unfortunately the period drama has pegged its narrative to the height of mediocracy as a simple crime drama. While Varun Tej (who plays ‘Vasu’) is depicted based on an actual person called Ratan Khatri or the ‘Matka King,’ it also glorifies the dark side of the industry of illegal gambling such as its intricacies and hazards, the movie tries too much to advertise gambling. Desperate times led Varun across to the harsh environment of Matka but the film does not settle well with the rest of the actors especially due to weak plot and screenplay. Story Foundation: The Ascent of Vasu as well as the Origins of Matka The character of Vasu, shaped by Ratan Khatri, reflects the complexities of a gambler who has to traverse his way through the maze of illegal betting. Supporting Characters: Allies, Enemies And Sequence Breaks Matka is no different as Vasu also meets many of such characters who appear to be an impediment or a progression for him through the film. As Vasu goes through more intense events, the love scene is acted out by Meenakshi Chaudhary as Sujatha, Vasu’s love interest, who performed well despite having less time on-screen. Vasu's feeling is shown by the movie’s romance scenes but the regret in this is that the time used for these was used instead to showing him gambling, a stark contrast on how the character should have been presented. Other supporting characters such as Satyam Rajesh and Ajay Ghosh and John Vijay had minor roles that offered nothing memorable; thus, leaving the audience wishing for more from these alliances and conflicts. When it comes to the underbelly of Visakhapatnam, both politics and crime seem to source out in every attempt one makes to understand it. The film industry has never been scarred by the presence of crime onscreen, in fact Matka seems highly promising and tantalizing due to the political power struggles that the inhabitants of Visakhapatnam tackled whilst coming into the criminal underworld. When trying to sell the film, the creators decided to use ‘a boy from the streets’ trope instead which is devoid of any depth but rather offers the audience a fluff piece that is entertaining as well as fails to offer an insight into the tectonic shift in crime and politics that transpired around the city of Visakhapatnam. This trend seems to not only be inflicted on the people but is apparent in the history of India as well as events like the Emergency and demonetization are treated as mere talking points. Speaking of opportunity, Varun Tej has plenty as he seems to have great command with the part of Vasu. On the other hand, the cinematography by Kishor Kumar is able to create an aura by using retro visuals and imagery which helps in knitted viewers to a different time period. Despite this, the narrative is full of good opportunities that were squandered, the pre climax and climax, and plot twists and character revelations were all unsurprising, therefore the pathos of the film did not have the desired magnitude. For the followers of crime drama and biographies, Matka makes them feel as if they are watching a half-baked version of a very popular genre. Conclusion: A captivating story with an attempt to be creative but fell flat Matka, while trying to tell the morally ambiguous story of an Indian Gambler does not push to deliver something that is remarkable or worth its meaning. Despite the films great set pieces and period accuracy or even Varun Tej's honest performance, it is held back by a poorly written plot and poorly developed characters. Understanding Kanguva Siva’s film Kanguva is a South Indian fantasy action drama starring Suriya, has been released. Wasting no time in making it, the deluge of information associated with this dramatic fantasy action movie pitched it as Kollywood’s response to the Baahubali range. With action- packed scenes and the Suriya’s dual role as well as mix of fantasy, adventure and drama, Kanguva is expected to be nothing short of amazing. But does it? Well, time to interrogate. Pan Overview: Kanguva’s Setting and Characters According to Kanguva’s synopsis, the film spun around modern day’s bounty hunter Francis (Suriya) in Goa, where delinquent bounty hunters work for money getting justice done. Where Francis gets hired when he works for reward instead of the law. What’s more interesting is that Francis has an ex-girlfriend, Angela (Disha Patani) who also works in the same field making it likely for them to meet in cross paths during bounty hunting. This time he meets Jeeta, a boy who makes Francis recall his youth when he used to play with his friends and would be quite happy. The relations he shared with people around him, and even had a glimpse of a middle eastern adult life . He feels a strong bond with this boy sensing that they somehow belong to the same civilization with their past intertwined in some way. The tale portrays the fact that Jeeta is in extreme risk and this changes everything for Francis transforming the venture into a single action and life threatening quest. Earlier on in the plan, Francis discovers that Jeeta is phytogenetically related to his ancestors and to a prince Kanguva of the year 1070. The story then turns to how these characters’ destinies are connected and draws analogies between today and thousands of years ago. An Epic Blended with History and the Modern World Kanguva manages to Alabama cover the period of a thousand years and then make that relevant to the present day which is astonishing. By the watch of this particular film, the audience is expected to observe a world set in an ancient time that is visually appealing, beautifully adorned, and accompanied by large settings. The work of Director Siva in this movie features a bright and wonderful imaginary fantasy world that was purposely crafted to appeal to the audience and fill them with excitement as new and impressive story content and images are introduced into the film which makes this fantasy world worth watching. The first 20 minutes or so is undoubtedly the most boring portion of the movie. So the audience becomes disengaged from the content, as they fail to provide an enthralling introduction to the movie. Everything starts working better after the introduction of the character Kanguva though there is still a loss of consistent flow in the narration. Kanguva or any of the characters introduced earlier fail to provide any binding cohesion as there are multiple clans and lineages, such as Pranava Kona, Kapala Kona, Sagara Kona, Aranya Kona and Hima Kona which could certainly be confusing for the viewers. Turning the focus towards Kanguva it’s crystal clear that it is a complete copy of Baahubali, because it has the same elements of storytelling and fantastical characters, Kanguva simply lacks the depth that set Baahubali apart from any other movie in history, with only major elements like world building and character arcs tied to them. For example each character present in Baahubali felt real, and created a solid connection with the audience to the extent where they said, why not take the journey with them. As for Kanguva, the major drawback was the lack of connection with the characters and clans in the movie. The importance of the plot was given more towards the fantasy elements of the world rather than the personal touch of the character development which for some was deeply lacking and disappointing. Strengths and Highlights of Kanguva In spite of these weaknesses, Kanguva excels in a few aspects. The bond Kanguva shares with Pulava, also one of the key figures, adds a layer of sensitivity to the film and is also one of the highlights of the film. Their bond as depicted in the scenes, Kanguva’s efforts to protect Pulava’s family and his conflicts with the villain Rudhira, played by Bobby Deol, are beautifully choreographed and are quite captivating. The climax scenes increase excitement for the second half of the film when a cameo appearance by an A-list actor adds an interesting twist to the plot. Performances and Technical Mastery Suriya’s stock character Kanguva is what stands out the most in the film. Suriya as both Francis and Kanguva, portrays the characters in such a way that they are both strong yet do display signs of weakness adding weight to the character. Memorable performance of Kanguva’s action in almost all of the scenes made him the star of the film. Bobby Deol as Rudhira is quite interesting, but his character should have been better developed. Disha Patani and Yogi Babu excel in their supporting roles, adding humor and diversity to the film’s temper. The film is flawless on the technical aspect as well, for it is established through Vetri Palaniswami’s cinematography which takes the audience back a millennium realistically and vividly. Prasad Devi’s music fits into the epic story of the film, even if it becomes excessive at times, enhancing the crucial episodes with catchy songs. In the film, director Siva’s drive and desire can be observed against the reasonably grand backdrop and impressive visuals, resulting in what seems a rather extravagant experience, but there are gaps in the story. Advantages of Kanguva Suriya’s out of the world performance in two roles portraying heightened emotions. Enchanting beautiful world filled with scope possibilities and effects. Convince the audience on the relations shared between Kanguva and Pulava. Amazing creativity and overall branding. Disadvantages of Kanguva Long drawn out Beginning with script that was not fleshed out effectively The plot is quite complicated with very few clans and an audience about 6 degrees of connections. Story does move forward goal but with few character arcs, especially for those in the creaside roles. Final Thoughts: One more testimony of Suriya’s acting skills At the end of the day, Killers will always view this movie as a display of Suriya’s acting prowess. The film does have a few plots episodes that are very strong but lacks a bit cohesiveness and character nuances that would allow it reach close to its vision. It will be Kanguva’s clear description Kanguva aimed to expand into a rich beautiful mythical world in the fantasy SIENA, hugely immersive as Suriya fans would enjoy watching. The Bottom line: Kanguva is and epic storytelling of a movie which has characters that can grasp attention of the audience and of course Suriya’s performance itself. Matka marks the return of Varun Tej returning with a period action-drama matka which was directed by Karuna Kumar who was famous for his earlier movie Palasa. Here, Varun is in this crime story cum self-redemption drama , in a role which is completely different than what he has done before on screen, in an attempt to startle audiences with a different movie telling experience. Here’s a detailed examination of how Matka performs on audiences and box office. Plot Overview The main character in this plot is a young boy named Vasu, who is a refugee from Burma and is trying to settle down in Visakhapatnam. Unfortunately due to the turn of events, as a teenager Vasu is compelled to murder a person and gets himself incarcerated. Narayana Murthy who is the jail warden there guides him severely, and hencenarayana decides to brace himself and become a highly competitive assailant who will help him survive against all odds. Once released, he begins to look for jobs in the profitable Poorna Market and ends up being hired by a coconut seller called Appalareddy. Vasu's prominence Market grows as he fights fierce local gang tensions and earns the respect of rival gang leader Nanibabu. He is ambitious and smart enough to then involve himself in the matka gambling business, where he is able to build a great name for himself. This is the stage in which he begins carving a pathway toward his rise in the underworld, which catches the eyes of law enforcement authorities including the CBI, who now view him as a major danger. This provides the context for Vasu’s attempts to struggle in order to retain his position and face oncoming challenges from other gangs, law enforcement as well as from his life so far. The events in the film take place in a pattern rather routinely, without creating any dynamic obstacles or requiring the central character to respond in uncommon ways, which makes the whole narrative a little bit too detectable. Storytelling and Techniques As for Matka, even though it is a story already known, it is not particularly impressive. Factors in his life which encourage him to become a crime boss are quite diverse, but it is their authenticity that is at stake here. His rise from a lower class prisoner half living on the outskirts of Poorna Market to swiftly installing himself into the gangsters pantheon is too cinematic for believable force. His struggles, or rather the lack of any value able to be categorized as a struggle or ever any sort of an obstacle, render the effort into producing lots of suspense a huge waste of resources. The matka gambling parts, which were there to pump some tension suspense and excitement into the thickening plot in every sense of the word, left a relatively calm and balanced plot behind. Climax and Critical Moments As one moves to the second half of the film, the battle only gets fiercer when the CBI starts making it a point that Vasu throws an end to his gambling business which seems to affect the economy on a global level. But then again, the potential of the film when it’s meant to get conflict none the less seem to bring the same outcome as the one prior. Vasu’s antagonists plans, as well as the CBI’s plans to get him off his power seem rather vague, and this sadness only cumulates very well in the entire scuffle. A rather interesting scene was Vasu telling a story to his daughter about how an evil man made it a point to do evil things to his sister, which in turn wasn’t showing when it was meant to add context to the audience. The final part of the film where Vasu outruns an endless gangle with nothing but a six shot revolver, It would have been rather believable if it wasn’t Vasu. Cast and Performances The role of Vasu must be played by Varun Tej and he performs the role well for an aged character who looks very much like Kamal Hassan’s in Indrudu Chandrudu. Tej also performs well during the action sequences especially when the scenes require any form of intensity from him. Yet another supporting character is sujata, played by Meenakshi who seems off key in the plot especially her love story with Vasu. Another supporting actress is Bare Prasus who plays Sofia as Nora Fatehi and is said to have a nice dance number but still plays a smaller role. Cameos include supporting characters of Kishore, John Vijay, Naveen Chandra and Ajay Ghosh which makes the film more diverse and interesting but their roles do not have any substance or significance towards the main plot. Direction and Technical Aspects Karuna Kumar is known to tell unique stories in Palasa but we see different in Matka as he quite hardly gathers the points he sets out to achieve in the film. What begins as an interesting concept towards Matka gambling fails to capture the audience’s attention at the latter stages and key scenes are poorly directed. The second half of the film is where the real confusion begins with the characters of the story and the events they partake in failing to intersect or mesh well. One of the stronger points in the series is the soundtrack as contributed by GV Prakash which helps set the mood and welcomes the viewer to certain scenes. The film captures the essence of the time through its art direction and cinematography and gives the viewers an eye catching experience. The overall quality of visual effects and sound effects were impressive and gave the film an edge. Strengths and Weaknesses Strengths The performance of Varun Tej Well choreographed and shot action Weaknesses A cliched plot Poorly executed matka gambling Second half and conclusion felt incoherent and rushed. Final Verdict Matka attempts to be a realistic gangster drama, but it simply doesn’t have a good plot, or plot that is innovative enough. While it is true that Varun Tej acted well and the technical aspects were okay, the film lacked suspense and depth which otherwise gives a good feeling. Speaking of the title role, actor Karthi has reemerged in the news because of his new film Vaa Vaathiyaar which is directed by Nalan Kumarasamy who is popular for Soodhu Kavvum. The film is set for release around the Pongal in January 2025, and it is expected to be a treat filled with punchlines, songs, and romance. The teaser that dropped a few weeks ago accompanied a lot of expectations as it gives a glimpse of the top tier cast, the most outstanding one being Krithi Shetty in the female lead role, not to mention Vaa Vaathiyaar's amazing visuals. Vaa Vaathiyaar :A Hilarious Yet Intense Action Film Vaa Vaathiyaar could be aptly described as a hilarious black comedy and box drama complete with many venerated actors like Sathyaraj and Rajkiran playing crucial parts in the movie. The 100-second teaser released depicts who the audience should expect the cinematography to be bright and full of color along with many loving and playful plot lines along with portrayals of vivid aggression. The production team when posting the trailer emphasized that putting colorful selection in rolling footage of the movie is what made it what it is. Tactical display begins with Karthi's Police officer character getting out of a car and joining a village festival procession. Lighthearted moments of Karthi’s dance interspaced with action sequences suggest that the film would be an action drama with comic undertones. Krithi Shetty and Shilpa Manjunath also add up to the cast who have well known actors like Anand Raj, Rajkiran and Sathyaraj apart from Karthi. Karthi's Vaa Vaathiyaar teaser makes him an amalgamation of a college's friendly dynamic personality as the director Nalan Kumarasamy described it. Light-hearted and comedic scenes are also apparent as the teaser shows Karthi being heroically celebrated at the police station. The streets were filled with people, folk dancers, and percussion sounds, while Santhosh Narayanan’s soundtracks boomed, and Karthi's character celebrating the moment over the beats. The teaser hints how the movie also captures Bain's relevant distinctness which is the hallmark of Nalan Kumarasamy’s directorial style. And just like Vaa Vaathiyaar, the theme also has humor while the suspense remains, indicating a more dramatic plot beneath the surface. Engaging and Ever Changing Dynamics Among the Characters and the Cast Aussie cricketer, Pat Cummins is known to be a risk taker and for breaching many women’s boundaries, exactly like Krithi Shetty who portrays the female lead in the movie. Vicky Kaushal who holds of lot of offers from Bollywood, will soon his work as Chiranjeevi Parashurama come to life in Mahavatar. On the set of Mahavatar Kaushal’s intense look was made public on November 13 leading up his fans and the film lovers as to when it would be officially released. With the film being directed by Amar Kaushik and produced by Dinesh Vijan who is known for his works in Maddock films is set to put his mark in christmas of 2026. The portrayal of historical personalities in Indian cinema has undergone a process of evolution over the years. With stars such as Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt headlining movies based on the Mahabharata few years back, Vicky Kaushal is now set to portray Chiranjeevi Parashurama on screen. According to one Production source, Vicky was looking for a project worth 200 crore after completing Love & War with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Considering all the possibilities, he accepted this intriguing role as there was a huge scope for a Parashurama film aimed at the masses. Pre-Production and Filming Timeline The work to actualize Mahavatar is in progress. Pre-production is set to start in January 2025 and the actual filming is slated to commence in November of that year. Having directed Stree 2, Amar Kaushik who is the project director hopes to enrich the project by lending his authentic vision to it. Their goal, however, is to tell the story in all its complexity marrying breathtaking cinema to illimitable scholarship exploring the life and times of parashurama with respect it demands. As per the sources of information available, Mahavatar is the most ambitious film of Maddock and requires colossal groundwork. It is projected that at least 6 to 8 months of pre- production period would be spent on making the graphics and sequences that are supposed to render the epic. This time frame provides the team enough room to achieve the required visual appeal and narrative complexity fitting for a legendary figure.
