Since coming into power in Telangana, the Congress-led government has initiated several significant reforms, marking a shift in the state’s identity and cultural representation. Telangana Government Initiates State Emblem Changes.

State Code Update and Anthem Recognition

Upon assuming office, the Congress government swiftly changed Telangana’s official state code from “TS” to “TG”. Additionally, the iconic composition “Jaya Jayahe Telangana” by Ande Sri has been bestowed with the prestigious status of ‘state song’. Composed by MM Keeravani, this anthem is set to be unveiled on June 2nd, commemorating Telangana Formation Day.

Redesigning the State Emblem

Under the leadership of Revanth Reddy, the government has decided to overhaul Telangana’s emblem, marking a departure from its previous design. Renowned artist Rudra Rajesham has been entrusted with designing the new emblem. Collaborating closely with Revanth Reddy, Rajesham has already presented several potential designs. One of these designs, speculated to be the final choice, has begun circulating on social media.

Adoption of State Emblem as the Emblem of Government of Telangana

The General Administration (Political.B) Department has issued the following order, pursuant to the formation of Telangana State and the approval received from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India:

In accordance with the Gazette of India Notification No. 6 of 2014 dated March 1, 2014, which announced the formation of Telangana as the 29th state of India with an appointed day of June 2, 2014 (Gazette Notification No.560, dated 4th March, 2014), the Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the State Emblem of Telangana under Rule 4(2) of the State Emblem of India (Regulation of Use) Rules, 2007 (amended in 2010).

Notification Details

The State Government mandates that all offices under its jurisdiction adopt the approved design of the State Emblem as the official emblem of the Government of Telangana. The description of the State Emblem is as follows:

The State Emblem includes the Amaraveerula Stupam Telangana,

OLD State Emblem as the Emblem of Government of Telangana

  • The State Emblem includes the Kakatiya Toranam and Charminar, both depicted in green color.
  • The Ashoka Lions, in gold color, including the Lion Capital with the inscription ‘Satyameva Jayate’ in Devanagari script prominently below it.
  • These elements are harmonized within a green circle, bordered by a gold circle.
  • The words ‘Government of Telangana’ are inscribed in green color in three languages: English, Telugu, and Urdu.

Implementation

All departments of the Secretariat and Heads of Departments of the Government of Telangana are directed to adopt the revised State Emblem. This adoption applies to all official stationery, invitations for state functions, official seals, and public displays such as on buildings and flags.

Symbolism and Criticism

The proposed emblem prominently features the Telangana Martyr’s Stupa, symbolizing the sacrifices made by martyrs during the statehood movement, alongside the Indian national emblem. Notably, the government’s name will now appear in four languages: Telugu, Urdu, English, and Hindi. This update marks a departure from the previous emblem, which showcased the Charminar, Kakatiya Thoranam, and the Indian emblem, with the government’s name in three languages.

Political Opposition

However, the decision to change the emblem has faced criticism from opposition parties, particularly the BRS party. They argue that symbols like the Charminar and Kakatiya Thoranam hold deep cultural significance for Telangana. The BRS party has announced plans to challenge the government’s decision in the High Court, emphasizing the emblem’s cultural importance and historical relevance to the region.
