Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 DPR Ready, New 40 Km Line Approved by CM Revanth Reddy

Hyderabad is set to witness significant developments in its metro rail network, with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail now complete. The expansion, which will include an additional 40 km route, has received approval from Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, marking a new chapter in the city’s transport infrastructure.

Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase 2 Construction Set for Expansion

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, known for his impactful decisions, has greenlit a crucial expansion project under the Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase 2. Currently, the authorities are finalizing the DPR for this phase, which is estimated to cover a total distance of 116 kilometers. This ambitious project is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing urban mobility across the city.

In a recent review meeting, CM Revanth Reddy not only approved the plans but also made significant adjustments to the routes. The second phase will involve constructing metro lines along new corridors, which will span over 40 kilometers from Shamshabad to Future City. This route, with an estimated cost of ₹32,237 crores, is part of the state government’s broader vision to expand public transportation.

New Metro Corridors: Strategic Expansion Plans

Hyderabad’s metro expansion in Phase 2 includes several new corridors that will bolster connectivity within the city. One of the most prominent routes is the construction of a 40-kilometer-long metro line from Shamshabad Airport to Future City, a hub of modern infrastructure. The government has made several revisions to the airport metro alignment, ensuring that it covers key areas, including the Aramghar-Bangalore Highway and the New High Court.

Other strategic extensions include the following corridors:

  • Corridor IV (Nagole to Shamshabad Airport): Spanning 36.6 kilometers, this route will pass through LB Nagar, Karmanghat, Owaisi Hospital, and Chandrayangutta. It is designed to connect with existing metro lines at Nagole and LB Nagar, enhancing commuter convenience.
  • Corridor V (Raidurg to Kokapet Neopolis): This 11.6-kilometer elevated metro line will connect Raidurg Metro Station to the fast-developing Kokapet Neopolis via key points such as Biodiversity Junction, Financial District, and Wipro Circle.
  • Corridor VI (MGBS to Chandrayangutta): Covering 7.5 kilometers, this extension will serve the Old City of Hyderabad, linking the iconic Charminar and Salarjung Museum areas while ensuring heritage preservation.

Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase 2: A New Era in Urban Mobility

The second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail will introduce an additional 116 kilometers of metro lines, complementing the existing 69 kilometers currently operational in three corridors—green, red, and blue. Once Phase 2 is completed, Hyderabad’s metro network will span a total of 185 kilometers, significantly transforming the way residents commute.

The proposed extensions, particularly to Shamshabad Airport and Future City, are expected to drive economic growth, reduce traffic congestion, and provide a sustainable mode of transportation for the expanding city. CM Revanth Reddy’s administration has emphasized the importance of these developments in boosting Hyderabad’s status as a major urban center.

Challenges in Metro Expansion and Innovative Solutions

As part of the new metro routes, approximately 1,100 properties will be affected due to road widening for metro alignments. This includes about 103 religious and heritage structures. To address these concerns, Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) managing director NVS Reddy stated that appropriate engineering solutions are being implemented, including the adjustment of metro pillar locations to preserve sensitive structures.

In a press release, Reddy elaborated on the careful planning behind the project, stating that the majority of the new corridors will be elevated, with minimal underground sections, ensuring cost-effectiveness and ease of construction. For example, the Shamshabad Airport line will be 36.6 kilometers long, with 35 kilometers elevated and only 1.6 kilometers underground, which includes a station at the airport itself.

Key Features of Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase 2

The new metro corridors will introduce several state-of-the-art features, designed to enhance the commuter experience. Key highlights of the project include:

  • High-capacity metro trains with improved frequency, reducing wait times and easing congestion during peak hours.
  • Interchange stations strategically located to provide seamless connectivity between different metro lines, making commuting across Hyderabad more efficient.
  • Eco-friendly initiatives, including the installation of solar panels on metro stations and the use of energy-efficient systems across the network.

Final Approvals and Government Support

The Telangana government has been proactive in pushing the second phase of metro construction forward. In addition to local approvals, the DPR for Phase 2 has been sent to the central government for the final green light. Once all necessary permissions are in place, construction will begin on the new corridors, with the government optimistic about a swift and smooth implementation.

The second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail is not only an expansion of physical infrastructure but also a step towards building a modern, sustainable city. As Hyderabad continues to grow, the metro’s second phase is poised to become an essential component of its urban ecosystem, providing residents with faster, greener, and more reliable transportation options.

Conclusion: Transforming Hyderabad with Metro Rail Expansion

With Phase 2 of the Hyderabad Metro Rail, the city is set to embrace a new era of public transportation. The expansion will bring much-needed relief to traffic congestion, create new economic opportunities, and promote sustainable urban development. Under the leadership of CM Revanth Reddy, Hyderabad is gearing up to become a model city in India with world-class metro infrastructure.

The strategic extensions in Phase 2, including new routes to Shamshabad Airport, Future City, and Kokapet Neopolis, will ensure that Hyderabad remains well-connected and poised for future growth. As the metro rail system continues to expand, Hyderabad’s journey towards becoming a smart, efficient, and commuter-friendly city moves one step closer to reality.
