Kerala Weather Alert Cyclonic Circulation Causes Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted potential heavy rainfall in Kerala over the next five days due to a cyclonic circulation above the Mannar Strait. This weather disturbance brings the likelihood of thunderstorms and heavy rain in several districts, coupled with rising daytime temperatures. With Kerala’s average November rainfall normally at 153.1 mm, this year could see even higher precipitation levels.

Cyclonic Circulation and Expected Weather Conditions

The cyclonic circulation over the Mannar Strait is anticipated to result in significant rainfall across Kerala, with a high probability of thunderstorms in the eastern areas during the afternoon. The IMD has warned of scattered heavy rainfall, prompting a yellow alert for several districts. Expected rainfall could reach between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period.

District-Specific Alerts and Precautions

Due to the anticipated heavy rainfall, yellow alerts are in place in the following districts:

  • November 2, 2024: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Palakkad
  • November 3, 2024: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Idukki

These alerts are aimed at ensuring public safety, especially as thunderstorms may bring winds reaching up to 40 km/h. Authorities have also imposed a temporary ban on fishing activities along Kerala’s coast due to turbulent sea conditions.

Reservoir Water Level Alerts

Due to rising water levels, Kerala’s reservoirs have been placed under alert:

  • Idukki District: Red alert at Kundala Dam
  • Thrissur District: Orange alert at Sholayar Dam
  • Idukki District: Blue alerts at Mattupetty and Anayirankal dams

Public Safety Guidelines

Residents, especially those living in landslide-prone or flood-prone areas, are urged to relocate to safer places as advised by local authorities. People residing near riverbanks and downstream from reservoirs should also take precautionary measures and consider moving to safer areas.

The IMD has outlined the following safety recommendations:

  • For landslide and flood-prone areas: Residents should relocate to safe zones and follow the instructions of local authorities.
  • For those near rivers and reservoirs: Move away from areas at risk of flooding and stay updated on local advisories.
  • Emergency Shelters: Ensure the availability of local camps or shelters and consider relocating during daytime if advised by officials.
  • In high-wind areas: Residents in buildings without secure roofing or walls should take extra caution. Make sure to contact local disaster management agencies if relocation becomes necessary.

High Wind Hazards

Strong winds could lead to falling trees and utility poles, creating hazards for both residents and emergency responders. People are advised to stay vigilant, especially in areas with dense tree cover or above-ground utilities.

By following these precautions and staying informed through official sources, residents of Kerala can help ensure their safety during this period of anticipated heavy rainfall and storms.
