You Don’t Need a PS5 to Play Games on PS Portal Anymore—Here’s Why

Sony has revolutionized the gaming experience for PlayStation fans by introducing a game-changing update to the PlayStation Portal (PS Portal). Previously, the device required a PS5 console to function as a Remote Play device. However, with this latest software update, the PS Portal now supports direct cloud streaming, eliminating the need for a PS5 to play supported games.

What’s New with the PS Portal?

The update, which began rolling out globally, brings several exciting features:

  1. Cloud Streaming for PS5 Games
  • Players can now stream select PS5 games directly from the PlayStation Plus Games Catalogue via the cloud, bypassing the need for a PS5 console.
  1. Exclusive Access for PS Plus Premium Members
  • This feature is available exclusively to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers, offering a library of over 120 supported PS5 titles. Popular games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Ghost of Tsushima are among the titles available.
  1. Enhanced Gameplay Experience
  • Games are streamed in up to 1080p resolution at 60fps, delivering smooth visuals and performance.
  • Full support for DualSense controller features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and more, enhances immersion during gameplay.

How Does It Work?

The PS Portal now connects directly to Sony’s cloud streaming services. Users with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription can log in, browse the games catalogue, and start playing without needing to pair the device with a PS5.

Limitations: Availability in Select Regions

While this update is a significant leap forward, it is not available in all regions. Currently, cloud streaming for the PS Portal is supported in these countries:

  • United States
  • United Kingdom
  • Japan
  • Canada
  • Germany
  • France
  • Spain
  • And many more across Europe and North America.

Unfortunately, India is not included, as the PlayStation Plus Premium plan, which includes cloud streaming, is not offered in the region. Indian users have access to the PS Plus Deluxe plan, which lacks this feature.

Why It Matters

This update transforms the PS Portal into a more versatile and standalone device, bridging the gap between a dedicated gaming console and mobile gaming. Gamers can now enjoy high-quality titles anywhere with a stable internet connection, making the PS Portal a compelling option for those seeking a portable and immersive gaming experience.

With this advancement, Sony continues to redefine gaming by expanding accessibility and delivering cutting-edge experiences to its users.
