Dubai Dh16 Billion Road Plan for Connectivity and Economic Growth

Dubai is embarking on a transformative journey with a Dh16 billion investment in road infrastructure, aimed at enhancing connectivity and driving economic growth. The ambitious Main Roads Development Plan 2024-2027, spearheaded by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), includes 22 major projects to improve the city’s traffic flow and expand its transport capabilities. This initiative promises to reshape Dubai’s transportation landscape, contributing to smoother commutes and more sustainable urban mobility.

Key Highlights of Dubai’s 2024-2027 Road Development Plan

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister, unveiled this comprehensive plan after visiting the RTA headquarters. Among the highlights is the introduction of an eco-friendly, autonomous “Trackless Tram” system, which will redefine urban transport with a virtual guided track system, providing an efficient and sustainable alternative to traditional public transport.

Increasing Traffic Demands in Dubai

The city’s roads are increasingly under pressure due to rising vehicle numbers, with daytime traffic peaking at 3.5 million vehicles. This represents a staggering 10% increase in just two years, outpacing global averages for urban centers. Despite this growth, Dubai has been remarkably successful in managing its traffic flow. According to the 2023 TomTom Global Traffic Index, Dubai’s 10-kilometer commutes take an average of 12 minutes and 50 seconds—faster than major cities like Singapore, Sydney, and London.

Introducing the Trackless Tram: Dubai’s Autonomous Transit Solution

A key element of the RTA’s plan is the introduction of a cutting-edge, autonomous trackless tram. This tram system, set to be rolled out in eight locations across Dubai, will feature three-carriage electric trams with a capacity for 300 passengers. Operating on a virtual track, the tram boasts lower operational costs, eco-friendly credentials, and a top speed of 70kph. With Dubai’s existing tram network already achieving a 99.9% punctuality rate, the trackless tram is expected to further enhance public transportation efficiency.

Expanding Dubai’s Road Network: Key Projects

In addition to the trackless tram, several road projects are slated to significantly reduce congestion and enhance travel times across the city. Among them is the Latifa bint Hamdan Street development, a 12-kilometer project that will stretch from Al Khail Road to Emirates Road, increasing road capacity for up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. This project is expected to cut travel times by 15-20%.

Another major project, the Meydan Road expansion, will accommodate up to 22,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, providing much-needed relief to this critical traffic artery. Similarly, upgrades to the Trade Centre Roundabout aim to reduce transit times to just 90 seconds, enhancing traffic flow in this busy part of the city.

Other planned improvements include projects for Umm Suqeim, Al Qudra, Al Fay, and Al Safa Streets. These projects are expected to ease congestion around prominent areas like City Walk.

The Future of Mobility in Dubai: AI, Smart Transport, and Cycling Networks

As part of Dubai’s vision for future mobility, Sheikh Hamdan also reviewed plans that incorporate AI-driven traffic management and autonomous transport. These initiatives, aimed at enhancing overall mobility, are in line with Dubai’s Self-Driving Transport Strategy 2030, which seeks to make 25% of all trips in the emirate driverless by 2030.

Additionally, a blueprint for expanding Bus and Taxi Lanes by 2025 and 2026 aims to reduce bus travel times by up to 41%. This initiative will provide a smoother, more reliable public transport experience for millions of daily riders.

Cycling enthusiasts are also set to benefit from the RTA’s cycling track expansion plan, which will connect popular coastal routes with inland areas. This network will link areas such as Jumeirah, Al Sufouh, and Dubai Marina with Al Qudra, Saih Al Salam, and Nad Al Sheba through strategic connections via Al Barsha and Dubai Hills.

A Decade of Dubai Tram and the Road Ahead

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Dubai Tram, Sheikh Hamdan announced plans to further explore the implementation of the Trackless Tram project, reinforcing the city’s commitment to sustainable, innovative transportation solutions. Under the leadership of Mattar Al Tayer, the RTA has become a global leader in delivering sustainable public transport solutions and developing world-class infrastructure. The agency’s ongoing projects and vision for the future reflect Dubai’s ambition to drive accelerated growth and enhance the quality of life for its residents.

Expanding Dubai’s Public Transport System

Sheikh Hamdan’s visit to the RTA headquarters also showcased the remarkable growth in Dubai’s public transport network. Serving 2.2 million riders daily, Dubai’s public transport has become a cornerstone of the city’s efforts to reduce road congestion and lower carbon emissions. Since 2006, the city’s road network has grown from 8,715 lane-kilometers to 18,990 lane-kilometers, marking a 117% increase. This infrastructure expansion is key to supporting Dubai’s rapid urbanization and increasing demand for transport services.

Conclusion: A New Era of Connectivity and Growth

Dubai’s Dh16 billion Main Roads Development Plan represents a bold step toward enhancing the city’s connectivity and economic potential. Through innovative projects such as the Trackless Tram and the expansion of key road networks, Dubai is not only addressing current traffic challenges but also setting the stage for a future of sustainable mobility. With its forward-thinking vision, the emirate continues to lead in infrastructure development, positioning itself as a global hub for innovation, business, and transport.

This comprehensive plan will not only benefit commuters but also spur economic growth, making Dubai an even more attractive destination for businesses, tourists, and residents alike.
