First FIR with Digital Signature in Telangana
On July 1, new criminal laws came into effect nationwide. Telangana police registered their first case under these laws in the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate’s jurisdiction. A motorcyclist traveling without a number plate was booked at the Charminar Police Station. This case, filed under Section 281 BNS and the Motor Vehicle Act, represents the first digital FIR in the state, as confirmed by the Telangana DGP.
First Case Registered in Delhi
On the same day, the first case under the new laws was registered in Delhi. A street vendor was booked for blocking the road, resulting in an FIR under Section 285 of the Bharathiya Nyaya Sanhitha. This section penalizes unauthorized occupation of property, causing inconvenience to the public, with fines up to Rs. 5,000.

The Telangana DGP shared on Twitter: “Telangana Police has registered the First FIR with Digital Signature under the Bharathiya Nyaya Sanhitha. The First FIR from Telangana under BNS has been issued today from Charminar Police Station of Hyderabad Police Commissionerate.”
Changes Introduced by New Laws
The new laws, effective from July 1, aim to make citizens more cautious and accountable. Home Minister Amit Shah expressed that these laws will bring about significant behavioral changes. Victims can now file complaints electronically without visiting the police station, and zero FIRs can be registered at any station irrespective of jurisdiction.
Rights and Transparency
Arrestees now have the right to inform their relatives or close ones about their situation, ensuring immediate assistance. Details of arrests will be displayed at local police stations and district headquarters. For serious crimes, forensic experts are mandated to visit the crime scene, and videography of the investigation is compulsory, enhancing transparency and trust in the legal process.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Telangana DGP Ravi Gupta announced, “I am happy to inform that the First FIR from Telangana under B N S has been issued today from Charminar Police Station of Hyderabad Police Commissionerate.”
Accident Report
An accident was reported at 2 a.m. involving a car heading towards the airport. The driver, Sai Ganesh, 25, was killed instantly. The body was sent to Gandhi Hospital for an autopsy, and the car was cleared from the expressway to resume traffic, according to Rajendranagar police.
Overview of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita comprises 358 sections, replacing the 511 sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). It introduces 20 new crimes, increases imprisonment sentences for 33 crimes, raises fines for 83 crimes, and mandates minimum punishments for 23 crimes. Additionally, community service penalties are introduced for six crimes, and 19 sections have been repealed.
