The Musi River, a tributary of the Krishna River, originates from the Ananthagiri Hills in Vikarabad, about 100 km from Hyderabad. Traversing 56 km within Hyderabad, the river divides the city’s old and new areas before merging with the Krishna River in Suryapet district. The rejuvenation plan aims to restore the river’s ecological balance and develop a picturesque riverfront to attract tourists.

Components of the Musi River Project

The ₹1.5 Lakh Crore project encompasses five key components:

  1. Water Management
    • Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs): The project plans to construct 39 STPs to treat sewage water, ensuring the river is fed with clean water. Linking the Godavari River to reservoirs like Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar will maintain a perennial water flow.

    • Removing Encroachments: Clearing encroachments along a 20 km stretch within the city is a significant challenge. The project requires building consensus among residents and providing adequate compensation to relocate them.
  5. Urban Rejuvenation
    • Creating People’s Plaza: Developing people’s plazas, bridges with hawker zones, and other public amenities to enhance the riverfront’s appeal.

Musi Riverfront Development Corporation (MRDCL)

To address these challenges and revitalize the river, the Government of Telangana established the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (MRDCL) through Go Ms. No. 90, MA&UD (II) Dept., dated 25.03.2017. This special purpose vehicle aims to abate pollution and facilitate comprehensive riverfront development, enhancing hygienic conditions and the overall environment.

Strengthening the existing sewage management system, enhancing sewer networks, and implementing stormwater management techniques are crucial steps. Additionally, fortifying the riverbed and embankments and exploring river linkage for perennial water flow are integral components.

2. Master Plan Development:

A comprehensive master plan will outline land use, trunk infrastructure, and financial strategies. Identifying locations for landmark architecture, transportation nodes, and growth zones will be based on extensive stakeholder and citizen consultations. This plan will create spaces for pedestrian zones, hawker bridges, recreation, tourist areas, and commercial centers.

3. Mobility Corridor and Transit-Oriented Development (TOD):

This component focuses on enhancing East-West connectivity and managing traffic efficiently. The Mobility Corridor will integrate road and rail networks with multimodal logistics hubs, facilitating streamlined traffic management.

4. Riverfront Development:

The Musi Riverfront Development project, estimated to cost over $7 billion USD, plans to secure funding from various sources, including government resources, multilateral funding agencies, financial markets, and private sector investments. 1. Blue Master Plan:
