Key Highlights of the Order
Expiration of Term for Elected Bodies
The ordinary elections for 10 municipal corporations and 120 municipal councils in Telangana were conducted in 2020. As per the legal framework, the current term of these elected urban local bodies will expire as follows:
- January 26, 2025: The term of 129 ULBs (120 municipalities and 9 municipal corporations) will come to an end.
- January 28, 2025: The term of the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation will conclude.
Challenges in Conducting Elections
The Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration (C&DMA), Hyderabad, have reported that conducting elections before the expiration of the current terms is not feasible. This situation necessitates appointing Special Officers to oversee the administration of these bodies.

To ensure smooth functioning and governance, the government has decided to appoint Special Officers to manage the affairs of these 128 ULBs from the date of expiration of their elected councils.
