India at London Olympics 2012: Mary Kom wins bronze
Never before in the India history we have 4 medals in London Olympics 2012 till now (8 August,2012). Despite of losing Boxing Women’s Fly (51kg) Semifinals with Great Britain Mary Kom wines bronze (in boxing which awards two bronze medals who loses in Semifinal ).
The great Indian mother of twins from Manipur was completely out-boxed by the second-seeded Briton in all the four rounds (1-3, 1-2, 2-3, 2-3) to deny the Indian to enter the final of the event.
She became the first Indian women boxer to claim an Olympic medal by entering the semifinal of women`s 51 kg category defeating Maroua Rahali of Tunisia. She is from Manipur, an insurgency wracked state in India’s remote northeast. The eldest of four siblings, she worked as a child in the fields to help out her poor farming family.
She’s been winning world championships for years, but boxing has few fans in India, and many in this traditional country can’t fathom the idea of a woman landing lethal left hooks. Only now, has “Magnificent Mary” seized the front pages.
